The Singularity is Near

October 22, 2005

I recently picked up a new book called The Singularity is Near by Ray Kurzweil who also wrote the great book The Age of Spiritual Machines.

I’m what Kurzweil (and others) call a “singularitarian” and when I saw this book I was thrilled, for several reasons.

1. Kurzweil has writen things that I have enjoyed reading prior to this book.

2. This book is huge, it costs about $30.00 (unless you buy it from the amazon link above… Then it will only cost about $18.00… at least at the time of this writing) but it is a big book so it is not like your throwing money away.  IE: $30.00 for a book that is only 100 pages would be a rip off.  This book has a page count of 652 pages, 602 of which is real contecnt (the remaining 50 pages make up an index.  Note: this 50 page index is a GOOD index, which is another plus for the book.

3. I read part of it in the shop and the contect was wonderfu, and exciting stuff.  Reading it made me feel very lucky to be alive at this point in time.

I plan to use this blog as a sort of research dump (a idea that I am stealing from Warren Ellis) where I post rather random qauestions, comments, answer, observations, and concerns that come into my head.

I expect that much of what will be coming into my head over the next several days will be as a result of this book so if you check back here often you will see lots of stuff about the singularity.

Web 2.0 thing

October 21, 2005

So I saw this over on flickr and web2.0 show’s site. I think that it is a great way to explain what web2.0 is, and what it is not. I’ve been having this idea for a tech sort of podcast kicking around in my head for about a month now, and IF I start to do said tech podcast I’m going to be talking about about this.

I’m testing out this new WP blog thing that I got. One of the things that I really wanted to do was see how it works with flickr.

If this works there will be a picture of my podcasting set up as part of this post.
